Trevor Fry
For many the voice of Radio West, Trevor’s broadcasting career started on the Bristol Hospital Broadcasting Service. He joined Radio West early in 1982, assisting John Hayes on the mid-morning show, presenting various weekend shows including Weekend Gold on Saturday evening, and also doing a stint on breakfast in late 1982. Trevor moved into his characteristic mid-morning slot in late 1983 and immediately established a good rapport with the audience, with his relaxed and companionable style. He also presented the flagship Sunday morning show “Sunday Best” from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
When Radio West became GWR, Trevor’s show was the only one to retain its slot, although it did lose an hour to finish at 11 a.m. to make way for Johnnie Walker. Later in the life of GWR the show was further shortened to 8:30-10 a.m. although it retained its original length when Johnnie Walker left to rejoin Radio One and his show was taken over by Mark Seaman. When GWR split its frequencies, Trevor became the Bristol breakfast presenter on the strange new AM station, Brunel Radio, and as that station evolved into Brunel Classic Gold, Trevor remained as breakfast presenter until just before the introduction of Mike Read’s nationally-networked breakfast show in the late 90s.
In conjunction with some other famous local broadcasters such as Adrian Jay, Trevor launched a bid for a new licence for Bristol in 1999 with “Cabot FM” and ran a very professional RSL under that name (with Paul Phear sweepers of course!), but the licence was awarded to 107.3 The Eagle (now The Breeze).
In 1999 Trevor joined BBC Radio Bristol, where he now presents a networked weekday late show from 10 p.m. – 1 a.m. and the Sunday breakfast show.
“Trevor spends much of the early part of this period unsupervised but seems to have got to grips with tricky but exhilarating subjects like farming reports, shares index and road works. Sadly has not made much impact on the in-depth news. A cheerful boy who handles this difficult period well.” (Venue, November 1982, when Trevor was on weekday breakfast)
